Mazza’s story

Dancing has always been my life. I have competed at the highest ballroom level and then started operating my own dance studio. Unfortunately in the prime time of my life of having a developing healthy studio and a fabulous family I had an accident at lost my lower left leg.

Now many years after I find it difficult to take longer walks but can dance amazingly with less damage to my body. Sounds crazy doesn’t it. With patience and re building muscle I dance and still have my studio. Stop dancing and the body is less able. So…… I keep going and am happy and lucky!

New Town kids and Active After-school Communities program

For the last 8 years New Town PS has participated in the Active After-school Communities (AASC) program. The program aims to engage primary aged children into structured physical activity, and to provide ongoing opportunities to participation in organised sport.

IDance was once such activity. IDance is a music driven multi-player game that combines video gaming, music, dancing and exercise.

IDance has been a very popular activity run within the AASC program particularly with traditionally inactive children. It is also well suited to children with disabilities or whose preference is not team sport.

The AASC program spoke to the children after the final session to see how they viewed physical activity/sport plus their reaction to IDance.

Many children commented that they were physically active but to varying degrees. Many felt the IDance session made them feel energised, and happy, plus several commented that they slept better on the night after the session. The children also loved the challenges involved and that they could go at their own pace while setting individual goals for each session.

Of the group of 20 children, 8 had been identified by the school as inactive, while a further 6 as being potentially overweight. Two particular children had never participated in high levels of physical activity and IDance was the first time they had continually been puffed out.

The AASC program will continue for the remainder of 2013 at 94 schools and after-school care services across the state and this story is only one of many great examples on how we are making a difference with primary aged children throughout Tasmania.

Jazzercise makes exercise fun

I have always been involved in exercise whether it be walking, jogging, gym etc but eighteen months ago I started doing Jazzercise which I absolutely love. Three times a week I travel to Lindisfarne and take part in an hours worth of the best exercise and fun I have ever had. Jazzercise is an aerobics style one hour class that incorporates dance, strength training, yoga, stretching and kick boxing.

The difference with Jazzercise Lindisfarne (and Cambridge) is that it is a ‘mini community’ of women aged between 18 and 60 who want to get fit but want to have fun at the same time. Not only do we get hot and sweaty but we laugh and have fun and make long lasting friendships.

In 33 years I have never felt so much part of a wonderful group of women. None of this would be possible though without the instructor Susan Oakley (a dynamic and amazing woman who motivates and keeps us energized at every session) and her team of class managers and her fellow instructors Paula, Tori and Sonia.

My sister and I go and we love it so much. It is the best thing we have ever done. Thanks Susan for making fitness fun and for sharing your love and enthusiasm for Jazzercise.
